From Sketch to Print: Our Custom Illustration Process

A finished illustration is the last of several stages, not the first — by the time artwork is print-ready, it's been through consultation, concept sketches, and rounds of refinement. Here's the process from start to finish.

1. Creative consultation

Every project starts with understanding what the illustration needs to do — for a brand, that might mean fitting an existing identity; for a personal piece, it might mean capturing something specific about the person or moment it's for.

2. Concept sketches

Rather than jumping to a final piece, we sketch multiple directions. This stage is where the loosest ideas get tested cheaply, before time goes into rendering one direction in full.

3. Custom hand-drawn illustration

Once a direction is chosen, the sketch becomes a fully rendered, hand-drawn illustration — line by line, not generated or templated. This is the core of what our Illustration services deliver, whether the final use is packaging, a brand identity, or event collateral.

4. Refinement

Feedback at this stage is usually about small things — spacing, weight, a detail that needs to read more clearly at a smaller size. It's a short round, but it's often what makes an illustration feel finished rather than just complete.

5. Print-ready delivery

The final step is preparing the artwork for however it'll actually be used — a journal cover, packaging, a brand asset — so it holds up in the real, physical format it's headed for, not just on screen.

Our custom illustrations collection and Illustration services page both show this process in the pieces we've completed, if you'd like a sense of the range before starting a brief.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the full process take?

Our Illustration package runs on a 3–4 week timeline from consultation through final delivery, depending on the scope of the brief.

Can I request changes after the first sketches?

Yes — the concept sketch stage exists specifically so direction can be adjusted before full rendering begins, which is far more efficient than revising a finished illustration.

Do you illustrate for packaging and brand identity, not just journals?

Yes. Illustration work through Humanise Studio covers brand identity, packaging design, and event collateral, in addition to our own product illustrations.
